This workshop is ideal for mental health professionals, including therapists, counselors, and psychologists, who are interested in transitioning to or enhancing their work in private practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and describe the 10 basic steps to establish a private practice.
  • Explain the differences between working “in” the business and working “on” the business and provide at least two examples of each.
  • Utilize tools to craft meaningful business values, mission statements, and vision statements for their private practice.
  • Locate and access specialized resources for private mental health practices to ensure ongoing support and development.

This educational activity is intended for behavioral health care professionals, including Counselors, Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Psychologists.

Course Instructor(s)

  • Shannon Kratky (she/they), MS, LPC, LCDC, NCC

    Shannon Kratky (she/they) is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC, TX), Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC, TX), and National Certified Counselor (NCC). She is currently a PhD Candidate in Counselor Education and Supervision at Oregon State University. Their research interests include the experiences of internalized oppression and liberation for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse with LGBTQiA2S+ identities. Shannon holds a Master of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Addictive Disorders and Recovery Studies from Texas Tech University.

    Shannon co-owns and operates a private practice in San Antonio, Texas, Courageous Story Counseling, PLLC, with her chosen mom, where she specializes in the treatment of adults with complex histories of trauma, substance use (harm reduction), and LGBTQiA2+ needs. Shannon is an EMDR Certified Therapist through the EMDR International Association and uses this evidence-based, mind–body therapeutic modality to help clients experiencing anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and other “disturbances” in their lives.

    During their master’s program at UTSA, Shannon was an NBCC Minority Fellowship Program for Addictions Counselors Fellow, where they committed to providing services for underserved and never-served populations. They remains committed to serving these populations today.

    Shannon currently serves on the NBCCF MFP Addictions Counseling Advisory Council and the NAADAC (The Association for Addiction Professionals) LGBTQiA2S+ Clinical Standards Committee. Additionally, Shannon serves as Treasurer of the Board of Directors for LBJ Behavioral Services, Inc., a non-profit that provides quality, culturally responsive mental health care to underserved and never-served persons in the Greater Orlando Area of Florida.

Instead, the Council has adopted rules that outline types of providers a licensee must receive continuing education from.” Visit the Texas BHEC website for more information: https://bhec.texas.gov/continuing-education-questions/ Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) in Texas In the State of Texas, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) can obtain Continuing Education (CEs) from activities directly related to the practice of professional counseling. At least fifty percent of the required 24 hours of continuing education per renewal period must come from specific providers, including a licensee with supervisor status and any provider approved or endorsed by a licensee with supervisor status. This workshop meets the Continuing Education (CE) requirements for LPCs in Texas, as it is both provided and endorsed by a licensee with supervisor status, Nancy Tamburo-Trevino, MA, MSW, LPC-S, LCSW, LCDC. Additionally, this workshop meets the CE requirements for the latter requirement listed above. This workshop meets the Continuing Education (CE) requirements for LCSWs in Texas.
